The Atlantic Canadian construction industry and friends came together in a big way on Saturday, October 28th, raising a remarkable $330,000 for the IWK during the 2017 Kent Great Big Dig.

“I’ve been involved with the Kent Great Big Dig for many years and I’m so grateful to our organizing team, sponsors and volunteers for hosting another incredible evening in support of the IWK,” says John Flemming of Ocean Contractors, who took over as event chair this year. “We are so fortunate to have the IWK in our community and I’m proud of the difference the local construction industry is making to the children and families of Atlantic Canada who rely on its care.”

Over the last 15 years, the event has raised more than $3.2 million for the IWK. This year, funds will support the replacement of the aging incubator fleet in the IWK’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with new Specialized Neonatal Incubators. These new incubators feature an overhead warmer, which allows the top to be raised so babies can stay warm and comfortable during delicate procedures. The warmer also enables the care team to respond to emergencies within seconds without having to transfer babies to a warming device, which can cause undue stress to a critically ill infant.
Katie and Sean Smith know just how vital it is for the IWK’s NICU to obtain these new incubators. Their son, Eli, spent the first two months of his life in an incubator after being born 16 weeks early, weighing just 1 lb. 8 oz.

Eli was discharged from the IWK in September, three days after his original due date. Today, weighing 12 pounds, he is home with his parents and is thriving!

“The funds raised at this year’s Kent Great Big Dig are supporting the life-saving care of patients like Eli,” says Jennifer Gillivan, President & CEO, IWK Foundation. “The IWK is the special place it is today for our patients and their families because of the unwavering generosity of our Maritime community.  Thank you to everyone involved in the Kent Great Big Dig for continuing to build a future of excellence at the IWK.”

Last weekend, members of the Stanhope Simpson team travelled to the Algonquin Report at Saint Andrews By-the-Sea to take in the 155th CANS AGM.  This year, Stanhope Simpson was proud to be a Gold Sponsor for event.

Congrats B.D. Stevens & Clayton Barlett

At the morning business sessions and annual general meeting, we were thrilled to be in attendance for two well deserved presentations.

Chris Sangster accepted the Bowman Award, for 25 years of continuous CANS membership, on behalf of our long time client B.D. Stevens Limited.  The Bowman Award is named after Earle Bowman of Fundy Construction – a past President and Honourary Life Member of CANS.

Through designation of Honourary Life Membership, the Construction Association of Nova Scotia wishes to honour individuals who, through their deeds and actions, have significantly contributed to the betterment of the Association, the industry, and attainment of CANS’ goals and visions.  This year, Clayton Bartlett, another valued Stanhope Simpson client, accepted the lifetime membership award.

Black and White Boogie

Later on that evening, the team broke out their classiest attire to attend the Black and White Masquerade Ball.  Rocking some impressive masks, they enjoyed a tasty dinner and dancing by the Sasha Muise Band.  The guys really clean up well, don’t you think?

Cyber insurance goes beyond your general liability or business policies to cover the costs of getting you up and running again after a breach, as well as the lost income due to a business shut down.  A breach can cause crippling damage to your data and your pocketbook.

Speciality insurance coverage for cyber risks is relatively new to the marketplace. However, the possibility of a cyber attack is a reality that every business owner needs to consider.  It is certainly not just a “big business” issue, as small businesses have become more attractive targets in the eyes of many hackers.

Did you know?

  • 40% of all cyber attacks target business with fewer than 500 employees
  • About 70% of Canadian businesses have been victims of cyber attacks
  • The average cost per incident is $15,000.
  • Cyber crime has surpassed illegal drug trafficking as a criminal moneymaker
